In class today my professor mentioned that, in the Nazi death camps, the people who survived best were members of two groups: criminals and Communists. He claimed this was because they had experience in organizing for a common goal others did not.

This one girl mentioned that perhaps also criminals, because they’ve been immoral in the past, and Communists, because they’re atheists, would be willing to do anything to survive.

Well, I raised my hand and said, “That implies nonreligious people are inherently less moral than others and I would disagree with that,” but I didn’t kill her on it, and I wish I really did. I wish I’d brought up that atheists are wildly underrepresented in prisons, but I didn’t. I didn’t throw down on this issue like I should’ve, and feel like I normally would have.

It’s the times when you disappoint yourself that feel the worst.
